A techie from West Bengal was lured into the employment ambit of Saudi Arabia by a local placement agency in Mumbai. Asraful Halque, a BSc (I-T) degree holder and a resident of Bhalugram in Burdwan district’s Mongalkote didn't know what he would land up into when he took the help of a Mumbai-based agency, Akbar Overseas, to join a bank in the I-T support team in Saudi Arabia.

Immediately after reaching Riyadh, his documents and visa were snatched from him. He was forced to work as a housekeeping staff for Saudi Credit and Savings Bank by a local recruiter there- Al Mufti. Speaking to The Hindu, a senior officer from the state police department said, "He was tortured when he refused to work. We contacted the Ministry of External Affairs and local authorities after receiving an e-mail from Ashraful. After prolonged persuasion, the CID successfully arranged for his return."

Asraful had sent an e-mail to the state police detailing his plight. Following which, the West Bengal CID brought him back from Daman. Meanwhile, Ashraful thanked the West Bengal government and Mamata Banerjee for giving him a new life.
