A school in Kottayam has decided to change the new uniform of all girl students from classes 5 to 10 following the controversy over its 'vulgar' design, which sparked a massive outrage online.

The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of St Alphonsa Public School Aruvithura near Erattupetta has reached an agreement to alter the uniform for around 350 senior girl students, most of whom were disturbed after the social media storm surrounding the outfit.

The school informed that the management will bear all the expenses for changing the uniform. The senior girls will now wear an overcoat instead of the controversial 'half jacket’ that caused the outrage, according to a The New Indian Express report.

“We have not done any wrong.  It was the PTA that selected the design and got it stitched three months ago.  We have not received any complaints from the parents regarding the uniform till now. However, we are all worried about the controversy and the children are upset. So we have decided to make a change to the uniform,” the report quoted PTA president Sabu Cyriac as saying.

It all started when photographer Zachariah Ponkunnam posted a picture of three girls wearing the uniform on his Facebook account. In the post, he had mentioned that the uniform had a vulgar design. The post went viral and social media users came down heavily on the school and its authorities.

Meanwhile, the management has lodged a complaint with the local police with in connection with defamatory social media campaigns against the school.
