A foreigner, who came to visit Mata Amritanandamayi Math, has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in critical condition. Mario Saporta, 37, has been admitted to the hospital with severe injuries all over his body.

The man is still in the critical stage but has regained consciousness and can speak. However, he will be kept under observation for another 24 hours, the hospital authorities said.

Saporta was brought to the hospital on Saturday night at 12.50 in the ambulance of Amritanandamayi Math. The police and two persons from the Math were with the man. He had suffered several injuries all over his body and was unconscious when brought to the hospital.

According to reports, the American had come to visit the Math and suffered injuries after he was beaten up. He had suffered injuries above his right eye, spine, chest, stomach and lower back.

It is not clear as to who attacked the man. However, the marks on his hands show that they were tied together with rope.

The police said that Saporta was not in a stable mental state when he was brought to the government hospital in Karunagappilly. The foreigner attacked the residents of the Ashram, including women, and was hence taken to the hospital. He became violent while at Karunagappilly hospital and was then taken to medical college, the police said.

Meanwhile, Kollam City Police Commissioner, Ajitha Beegum said that the man was drunk and entered into a ruckus with the local people resulting in injuries.

However, it is not clear as to why the police are not ready to inquire into an incident where a foreigner was seriously injured. The police are yet to take the statement of the foreigner.

In 2012, Satnam Singh, a native of Bihar, who came to visit the Math had died after he was beaten up severely. However, the police did not launch an effective inquiry in the case.
