How Sharad Yadav lost his izzat, women’s votes again

  • “If you sell your vote then the whole nation loses its honour”
  • “The women of south are dark but they are as beautiful as their bodies ... We don't see it here. They know dance (too)”
How Sharad Yadav lost his izzat womens votes again

"Ye beti ki izzat se zyaada badi hai, vote ki izzat. Beti ki izzat jayegi toh gaon mohalle ki izzat jayegi, vote ek baar bik gaya, ek baar gadbad ho gaya to illake, ki desh ki izzat aur abru aur aane wala sapna poora nahi hoga”

Translation: If the honour of the daughter goes then the honour of the village/mohallah goes, but if you sell your vote then the whole place, nation loses its honour and all our future dreams will never come to fruition

No words to explain why Mr Sharad Yadav feels this way. Repeatedly, his ability to compare the most trivial of things to women’s honour really baffles me. Not only that, how the audience that gathers for his speeches encourage him by clapping and laughing.

Here are two quotes that his oratory has given us, each one of them highlighting his sexist mindset:

  • On a total non-related issue, he spoke to the House, commenting on the women from South India, saying: "The women of south are dark but they are as beautiful as their bodies ... We don't see it here. They know dance (too)."

  • During a discussion on women's reservation bill, Yadav had once described well-off urban women as "par kati mahilayen" (short-haired women).

So now, going by Sharad Yadav’s comparison women in India do not have even that much value as a vote. Politics trumps relationships, is something we have seen happening live but Sharad Yadav is a living embodiment of it. Just for the sake of it, I went and looked up how many children does he have and surprise, surprise, - he has 1 son and 1 daughter. There is more to it, his professions prior to politics has been listed as Agriculturist, Educationist and Engineer.

The facts totally go against what comes out of his mouth. Talking about the importance of vote, here’s a reminder Sharad Yadav. We vote or rather elect those representatives who can hold a decent conversation and can get by without offending the public with their words or deeds. And you, Mr Minister, don’t have a good track record in that department; unless the people who vote for you think the way you do.

It is surprising how easily the minister could make this analogy in the first place. A woman/daughter’s honour is not related to her clothes or her body, please get that straight. She is not some prize object, losing which will bring dishonour or disgrace to anyone. She is a human being, a living breathing person like any other male. So if a male loses his clothes or is assaulted, does he also bring dishonour to his family/mohalla/village?

Stop! Just stop with it dear politicians. When you talk of protecting the honour of your bahu/beti, protect them from your mindset first and then talk of the nation later. The future of the nation will be ruined if it has more people thinking and speaking like you and not because of the sale of votes.

You are worried about the sale of votes, sorry to say but people of your kind(politicians) are known to do it every election. Please clean your kind of dishonesty first and then talk of honour.
