Pakistan has roped in Matthew Hayden and Vernon Philander as its coaches for the 2021 ICC World T20 in an exciting move. The two would be taking over the duties during the tournament in the United Arab Emirates, as announced by new Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja.

As of now, it is unclear as to what would be the precise role of the two. However, it is expected that Hayden would be the batting coach, while former South African pacer Philander would handle the bowling department. Besides, Raja also announced that a head coach would be announced soon, while he did not divulge the name yet.

Speaking on the appointment of Hayden and Philander, Raja stated that besides being a great batsman, the Australian's experience of winning World Cups would be highly beneficial for the team. Also, Philander happened to be a great bowler himself and has good knowledge in the area, having had a good track record against Australia.

However, it must be noted that neither Hayden nor Philander have abundant coaching experience. While Hayden retired in 2009, he has been chiefly in the broadcast sector, and Pakistan would be his first significant coaching stint. As for Philander, it was just last year that he had retired from international cricket and would be making his coaching debut with Pakistan.

Earlier, head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis had stepped down from the role just hours after the squad for the tournament was announced, citing fatigue. While Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq would be interim coaches for the home series against New Zealand, the former would likely continue as the head coach until the WT20, reports ESPNCricinfo.

Speaking on Pakistan's chances in the WT20, Raja felt that the side could win it. But, it would need to raise its gameplay performance by an extra ten per cent.
