Indian PM Modi is the new hero in Israeli media

  • Israelis give a beautiful tribute to the PM of India with "Aapka Swagat Hai".
  • It is not every day that one meets a Prime Minister representing 1.2 billion people, one considered a superstar at home and abroad. Maybe that is why the meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt so special, says daily Hayom.
  • Modi’s visit will also express the fulfillment of a long-unrequited desire, dating back to the early days of the Jewish state, for close ties with, and recognition from, India, says Haaretz.
Modi is the new hero in Israeli media

A particular twitter post by Indians for Israel showing Israelis welcoming Indian premier Narendra Modi in Hindi is reflective of the thrill and enthusiasm that the country has toward India. While bilateral discussions form a part of the larger agenda, the enthusiasm of the Jews in the country is also influencing the social and general media reactions in the country.

The fact that PM Modi is the first Prime Minister of India to visit Israel seems to be a reason for celebration for Israelis, especially after the former had downplayed the bilateral relation for fear of domestic fallout.

Needless to say, Israeli media has gone bonkers over the PM's visit in their headlines and coverages.

For instance:

Israel Hayom, in its introduction, said, "It is not every day that one meets a Prime Minister representing 1.2 billion people, one considered a superstar at home and abroad. Maybe that is why the meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt so special." It further noted, "Modi is a different kind of leader. With sky-high popularity among Indians, he can say what he wants and push for the reforms he seeks.”

The Jerusalem Post has done an extensive coverage on the history of India-Israel ties and the historic visit on their website. In an article written by Jonathan Adelman, he says, "Only time will tell, but India may well turn out to be one of Israel’s closest friends, bound by common enemies and common aspirations in the 21st century.” In another article, it says, "He (Modi) will be setting a  precedent by arriving in the country on July 4 as Israel and India mark a quarter of a century of diplomatic relations, and Israelis can hardly contain their excitement.”

Hamodia's headline on PM Modi's visit does not give away anything until the story is read. The article talks about the bilateral possibilities and the curtain raisers that could form the highlight of the visit after a long playdown. Defence, agriculture, academics, every aspect of the visit was covered in the newspaper.

Israeli Business Daily went further ahead in naming PM Modi as the "most important PM in the world". It said, "Wake up: the most important PM of the world is coming.”

Haaretz has published multiple articles on the political visit, all showering praises on the Prime Minister of India. In one particular article, it said, "Modi’s visit will also express the fulfillment of a long-unrequited desire, dating back to the early days of the Jewish state, for close ties with, and recognition from, India." The article also traces the history of India-Israel relations. The article also discusses how the relations turned sour because of the colonial rule in India.
