Disputes among nations 'need to be handled through dialogue, cooperation': China's Xi Jinping
President Jinping stated that the world must campaign for the common ideals of mankind, including as peace, development, equality, justice, democracy, and freedom, and oppose the practice of establishing tiny circles or zero-sum games.
FollowIn the face of rising tensions with the US, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that disagreements between countries "ought to be resolved via communication and cooperation" and encouraged world leaders to avoid "confrontation and exclusion." Addressing the high-level 76th UN General Assembly via video connection, President Jinping stated that the world must campaign for the common ideals of mankind, including as peace, development, equality, justice, democracy, and freedom, and oppose the practice of establishing tiny circles or zero-sum games.
He said differences and problems among countries are hardly avoidable and needs to be handled through dialogue and cooperation based on equality and mutual respect. He went on to say that they should prioritise discussion and inclusion over conflict and exclusion. They must forge new international relations based on mutual respect, equality, justice, and win-win collaboration. He said that the world must improve global governance and practice true multilateralism.
The President further said the UN should serve as the central platform for countries to safeguard universal security jointly, share development achievements and chart the course for the world's future. Xi Jinping stated that the United Nations should engage in all three areas of security, development, and human rights in a balanced manner.
He urged the UN to continue its commitment to establishing a stable international order, enhancing the representation and participation of developing nations in international affairs, and taking the lead in strengthening democracy and the rule of law in international relations. The President stated that China would vehemently reject any political manoeuvring in global COVID-19 origins tracking and continue to engage in international science-based coronavirus origins tracing. The statements appeared to reference efforts by the United States and the European Union to persuade Beijing to allow research into the coronavirus's origins when it first arose in Wuhan. He said that China would aim to give two billion doses of coronavirus vaccine to the world by the end of this year.
Xi Jinping's comments came hours after US President Joe Biden said he did not intend to start a "new Cold War" with China. The US and China have been locked in a standoff fuelled by significant disagreements on trade, technology, Beijing's aggressive moves in the South China Sea, and human rights. Earlier this year, high-level talks between the Biden administration and Beijing were fraught with tension - with officials on both sides exchanging sharp rebukes in public.
