Zydus Cadila vaccine for 12-18 age group will be available soon: Centre informs Supreme Court

The Central government informed the Supreme Court that Zydus Cadila, which is developing DNA vaccines, has concluded its clinical trial for children between the age group of 12 to 18 years and the shots will be available soon.

New Delhi: The Centre on Saturday informed the Supreme Court that a new Covid-19 vaccine would be available soon for the 12-18 age group. The new vaccine will be developed by Indian pharmaceutical firm Zydus Cadila, the Centre said in an affidavit to the top court.

"It is submitted that Zydus Cadila which is developing DNA vaccines has concluded its clinical trial for between the age group of 12 to 18 years of age and subject to the statutory permissions, the same may be available in near future for children in the age group of 12 to 18 years of age," the Centre said in its affidavit filed in the top court in the suo motu matter on Covid management.

In an affidavit to the top court, the central government also said 186.6 crore vaccine shots are needed to inoculate residents aged above 18 years. It said that the 135 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines will be available by December 2021.

It added that the production capacity of the Covid vaccines is being ramped up and expected to further increase in the next few months. Further, the Centre said that 186.6 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines are needed for vaccinating people above 18 years.

The Centre also told the court that efforts were underway to completely vaccinate all adults by December 31. “Out of this requirement, 51.6 crore doses will be made available for administration by July 31, 2021 leaving a requirement of approximately 135 crore vaccine doses for complete vaccination to the eligible population,” the affidavit said.

Walk in vaccinations have been allowed for all ages and digital divide is not a constraint for access to vaccines anymore, it added.

According to the Centre, the projected availability of Covid vaccine doses from August 2021 to December 2021 are as follows: Covishield 50 crore, Covaxin 40 crore, Bio E Sub unit vaccine 30 crore, Zydus Cadila DNA vaccine 5 crore, Sputnik V 10 crore.

The affidavit also said that another coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V developed by M/s Gamaleya Institute in Russia, has received Emergency Use Authorization by the DCGI, India in April 2021 and is now being administered in India.
