Union Minister Narayan Rane has been arrested over his controversial remark in which he said he would slap Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray for his "ignorance on the year of India's Independence".

"I am not a common man. I have not committed any crime. Is it not a crime if someone doesn't know about 15th August? I had said that I would have slapped these were the words and it's not a crime," Union Minister Narayan Rane was quoted as saying by ANI.

Rane kicked up a storm with his statement that is likely to spiral into a bigger controversy, while addressing a Jan Ashirvad Yatra of the BJP in Raigad district on Monday. At least three FIRs were registered against Rane for his remarks against Chief Minister Udhav Thackeray and Mumbai Police Commissioner had ordered his immediate arrest.

Meanwhile, earlier Rane’s advocate Aniket Nikam moved the Bombay High Court with a plea seeking quashing of the FIRs against the minister. Nikam had said he will be seeking quashing of all FIRs registered against Rane or in preparation of being registered. As an immediate relief, Nikam said he will be seeking relief from arrest.

However, the Ratnagiri court rejected Narayan Rane's anticipatory bail plea.

Shiv Sena workers earlier took to streets in Rajapur, Lanja, Ratnagiri in the Konkan region and tore up the posters and banners, while raising slogans against Rane. They also pelted stones at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Nashik, following which police used cane-charge to disperse the protesters.

Launching a fierce attack, Shiv Sena MP Vinayak Raut also wrote to PM Narendra Modi, demanding sacking of Union minister Narayan Rane over his remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
