Lucknow: Bodies of two Dalit girls, aged 13 and 16, were found in the family’s field in Unnao district on Wednesday evening, along with a 17-year-old in a serious condition, police said.

Three girls had left their house to bring fodder for the cattle but had not returned, following which, locals began to look for them. The elder girls were sisters, with the 13-year-old their cousin.

The villagers informed the police and rushed the girls to a hospital, where two of them were declared brought dead while one was taken to the Unnao hospital for treatment, they said.

Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni, who reached the spot, said that the two girls have died while the other one has been admitted to a hospital. The bodies of the victims have been sent for postmortem and an investigation is underway, police said.

The police said that their clothes were intact and no superficial injury marks were found on the bodies of the victims aged 13, 16 and 17 years. The police have suspected a case of food poisoning.

Speaking to reporters, the brother said, “They had gone to the farm to collect grass. Today, they got late returning, so we went to look for them. We found them tied up, with clothes like their chunni.”

According to a report on The Indian Express, IG (Lucknow Range) Laxmi Singh said they were yet to confirm if the girls were tied up. “The brother has given a statement saying this, but we can’t say anything because the bodies were removed before the police reached the spot,” Singh said.

UP ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said the girls had left their house on Wednesday around 3 pm and were found by the family members in the evening.
