Focusing on micromanagement of the pandemic, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday announced to open schools and colleges for students of classes 8 to 12 from August 23 in districts that have less than 2% Covid-19 positivity rate.

The Karnataka government has decided not to open schools in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru and Mysuru districts since the positivity rate is above 2%.

Also, he instructed all parents and school employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to be allowed to enter into the school premises.

Meanwhile, colleges have opened with offline classes but only for students and employees who are vaccinated. However, school students could not be called to attend physical classes as have not been vaccinated as they are under 18.

Ruling out complete lockdown, the government decided to continue the guidelines related to night curfew (9 pm to 5 am) in the entire state for the next 15 days.

In the meeting, CM Bommai also announced not imply Zero traffic rules for his city travel in Bengaluru. Earlier, the Chief Minister along with his ministers were getting zero traffic to avoid traffic congestion during their travel in the city.

Karnataka on Friday reported 1,669 fresh coronavirus cases and 22 deaths, taking the total number of infections to 29,26,401 and the death toll to 36,933.  The day also saw 1,672 discharges, taking the total number of recoveries to 28,66,739.

Bengaluru urban accounted for 425 new cases, as the city saw 424 discharges and 5 deaths. Active Covid-19 cases stood at 22,703.  While the positivity rate for the day stood at 0.98%, the case fatality rate (CFR) was at 1.31%.

Dakshina Kannada and Kolar reported 3 deaths each, Belagavi, Chitradurga, Hassan and Tumakuru (2 each), followed by others. Dakshina Kannada recorded 390 new cases, Udupi 115, Hassan 113, Mysuru 106, followed by others.
