Yoga guru Ramdev on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court challenging multiple first information reports (FIRs) against him for his comments on efficacy of allopathy in treatment of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). He has also sought protection from 'coercive actions' in the FIRs lodged by Indian Medical Association's Patna and Raipur wings. He further sought a transfer of these complaints to Delhi.

Last month, as the second wave of Covid ripped through the country killing thousands, Ramdev stirred a controversy with his remarks on the efficacy of allopathic drugs against the virus.

In a widely shared video, he was heard saying, "Lakhs of people have died because of allopathic medicines, far more than those who died because they did not get treatment or oxygen."

He even purportedly called allopathy a "stupid and bankrupt" science, offending the whole medical fraternity.

His remarks caused massive outrage, with the IMA sending over a legal notice to him.

IMA also said that the Union health minister should step forward and take action against his "unlearned" statements.

It was after a nudge from the Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, that he officially tendered an apology, and also withdrew his controversial comments about modern medicinal methods.

Ramdev's firm Patanjali, had rushed to his defence and claimed that the statement being attributed to him by the IMA was false.

Various units of the Indian Medical Association filed complaints against him with the police, based on which multiple cases were lodged. The association, which had sought an apology within 15 days, later sued him for defamation and demanded a compensation of Rs 1,000 crore.

The Delhi Medical Association also went to court, seeking a token compensation of Re 1 and an unconditional apology.
