Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again attacked the Opposition for stalling Parliament and asked his MPs to ensure proceedings continue with maximum attendance in the Houses.

Addressing party MPs at the BJP parliamentary party meeting, the Prime Minister asked them not to lose calm as the Opposition continues their chaotic protests inside both Houses.

The PM also took offence to the kind of language used by some leaders of the opposition regarding passage of bills and called it not just an insult to Parliament but to the people of the country.

PM Modi also slammed the opposition for disrupting proceedings, said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. “This is an insult to Parliament, people, constitution and Democracy,” PM was quoted as saying over the opposition’s disruptions.

The Opposition has stalled Parliament's proceedings demanding a discussion on the Pegasus snooping row, an issue dismissed as inconsequential by the government.

While a TMC member in Rajya Sabha had torn the statement of IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the Pegasus issue, several opposition members had torn papers in Lok Sabha and threw it in the air and towards the Chair.

Union Minister V Muraleedharan, addressing the media after the BJP meet, said the prime minister started with happy news that July has brought in. “We had Rs 1.16 lakh crore GST collection. News from Tokyo Olympics, whether it’s bronze by PV Sindhu or achievements of hockey teams, has come in July," PM Modi said.

He also spoke about e-Rupi, a new digital payment mode and said it will have “targeted and purpose-specific benefit for people". The digital voucher aims to ensure that government’s monetary benefits directly reach citizens in a ‘leak-proof’ manner.

During today’s parliamentary party meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a presentation on the state of the economy. Sources said she told MPs that the welfare schemes initiated by the government have given relief to the poor who were facing issues due to the Covid pandemic. She said the economy has picked up after a lull from June -July.

Amid repeated adjournments and fierce protests, productivity of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha now stand at just 14% and 20%, respectively. Both Houses faced repeated disruptions and protests even on Monday.

While the monsoon session of parliament began on July 19, Parliament has functioned for only 18 hours out of possible 107 hours in the first two weeks. More than Rs 133 crore in taxpayer money has been lost because of disruptions, government sources said on Saturday.
