New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed a desire to build "cordial relations" with Pakistan but stressed for that to happen, an "environment of trust" that is "devoid of terror" is "imperative".

PM Modi wrote the letter to Khan to extend greetings to the people of that country on the occasion of Pakistan Day.

"As a neighbouring country, India desires cordial relations with the people of Pakistan. For this, an environment of trust, devoid of terror and hostility, is imperative," he said.

The Prime Minister also conveyed his best wishes to the people of Pakistan in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"At this difficult time for humanity, I would like to convey my best wishes to you and the people of Pakistan for dealing with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic," he wrote to his Pakistani counterpart.

Government sources said it is a routine letter sent every year.

There have been indications of positive movement in ties between India and Pakistan.

Last month, the Indian and Pakistani armies recommitted themselves to the 2003 ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan celebrated its 70th National Day on Tuesday. This day is celebrated every year on March 23 to commemorate the 'Lahore Resolution' of 1940 and adoption of the first Constitution of Pakistan during the transition of the Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, making the country the world's first Islamic republic.
