Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh has moved the Supreme Court seeking a probe into the allegations of political interference and extortion raised by him in his eight-page letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

According to reports, senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi will appear for Param Bir Singh.

The move follows the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi throwing weight behind Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, against whom Param Bir Singh has levelled serious allegations.

The petition also challenges the March 17 order transferring Param Bir from the Mumbai Police chief's post as violative of Article 14 and 21 of the Constitution.

Param Bir Singh was transferred as Home Guards DG allegedly over his mishandling of the Antilia bomb scare and Mansukh Hiren murder case. The fact that key accused Mumbai Police inspector Sachin Vaze -- head of the crime branch's Criminal Investigation Unit -- reported directly to him didn't help matters either.

Param Bir had, in his letter, accused Deshmukh of political interference in cases and ordering police officers to extort up to Rs 100 crore monthly from bars, restaurants and other establishments in the city.

The officer also alleged that he had notified the state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar about the alleged malpractices of Deshmukh.

In his petition, the officer claimed that he was transferred against the established principle of stability of civil servants' tenure."

"The transfer of the Petitioner has been done without any justifiable reasons and upon the whims of the political executive," the petition said.

The action, the petition further states, indicated "excessive control by the political executive over the police" and has the inherent danger of making the police "a tool for subverting the process of law".
