Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the 81st session of his monthly radio show 'Mann ki Baat' on Sunday and pointed out that a river is not a physical thing but a living entity and urged people to observe World Rivers Day.

PM Modi said, "We mark so many days, but there is one more day we should celebrate. It is 'World River Day'. This day is very consistent with the traditions of India."

He termed September an important month, a month when to celebrate World River Day, and said it is a day to remember the contribution of our rivers that selflessly provide us with water.

"It is about connecting with the traditions with which we have been associated for centuries. This is 'World Rivers Day," he added. Observed on the fourth Sunday of every September, World Rivers Day celebrates the world’s waterways.

The Prime Minister also urged people to abide by Covid-safety rules during the festive season.

"Festivals are approaching, we have to continue our fight with Covid. 'Team India' is making new records every day, including vaccination which has made records internationally... No one should be devoid of this 'Suraksha Chakra', protocols should be followed," he said.

He also urged citizens to get vaccinated and encourage others to get jabbed.

PM Modi also said that proceeds from the ongoing special e-auction of gifts he receives will be dedicated to the government’s flagship project 'Namami Gange'. The government has set up a dedicated site — pmmementos.gov.in — to display and e-auction the mementoes that are priced between Rs 100 and Rs 30,000. Visitors to the site can filter through the mementoes on the basis of the price range.
