New Delhi: The External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday told his Chinese counterpart that the relationship between India and China is being impacted in a negative manner by the existing situation in Eastern Ladakh getting prolonged.

India and China have agreed that solving the border row should be prioritised as a ‘prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side’, the government said on Wednesday in a statement after a meeting between Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

...It was visibly impacting the relationship in a negative manner, the government said in the statement, referring to the border situation.

During a one-hour meeting on the sidelines of an SCO conclave in Dushanbe, Jaishankar also told Wang that any unilateral change in the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was “not acceptable” to India and that the overall ties can only develop after full restoration of peace and tranquility in eastern Ladakh.

"Concluded a one-hour bilateral meeting with State Councillor and FM Wang Yi of China on the sidelines of Dushanbe SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting. Discussions focused on the outstanding issues along the LAC in the Western Sector," Jaishankar tweeted, referring to the Line of Actual Control.

"Highlighted that unilateral change of status quo is not acceptable. Full restoration and maintenance of peace and tranquillity in border areas is essential for development of our ties. Agreed on convening an early meeting of the Senior Military Commanders," the Foreign Minister tweeted, along with a photo of him shaking hands with his Chinese counterpart.

Jaishankar and Wang have held talks twice this year — in February and April. They discussed the status of LAC disengagement and implementation of the Moscow agreement and also agreed to establish a hotline for timely communication.
