The Karnataka government suspended all physical classes in Bengaluru schools with immediate effect. No physical classes for students of classes 6 to 9 are allowed in the district.

"Keeping in view the increasing COVID cases, the physical classes for standard six to nine has been stopped with immediate effect till the next order," state Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said in a statement.

Regarding exams, the minister clarified that the directions on holding the exams for classes six to nine will be taken in the coming days. The regular classes for class six to nine started from January 1 in the state after the primary and secondary schools remained shut more than half of the 2020-21 academic year.

Classes are to continue in online or remote mode for the students. The offline classes for Class 10 students, however, will continue. The order was released on Thursday amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the city.

Virtual classes or the online classes were the only means to impart education to the students between Class six and 10 to contain coronavirus cases last year.

Karnataka reported 4,234 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, with Bengaluru Urban again topping the tally with 2,906 cases. The number of recoveries statewide stood at 1,599, with Bengaluru Urban accounting for 719.
