New Delhi: The foreign ministers of India and China are expected to hold discussion on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which is being held at Dushanbe in Tajikistan from September 16.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar who has reached Dushanbe today, will hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from Tajikistan and Iran.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has also arrived in the capital city to participate in the SCO Summit.

On being asked about Jaishankar meets with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the Summit, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “Our EAM will be there and hopefully we will be having number of bilateral meetings. I don’t want to prejudge which one. I am not rule in or rule out any meetings. So lets wait for what meeting takes place.”

SCO is celebrating its 20th anniversary of its foundation, in which India is participating for the fourth times as a full member.

Bagchi said India’s position is same.

“We reiterate our position that completion of disengagement in the remaining areas can pave the way forward for two sides to consider de-escalation of forces and ensure full restoration peace and tranquility and enable bilateral relations,”

QUAD Leaders’ Summit in Washington

The QUAD member nations’ top leaders will be meeting in Washington DC on September 24 to discuss the Indo-Pacific region along with emerging situation in Afghanistan, Covid-19, vaccine supply chain among others.

QUAD is a group of four nations, including India, Japan, Australia and the US. China sees it as a group to counter its influence in the region.

“PM will participate in the first in-person Quad leaders' summit in Washington on Sept 24th. On Sept 25, he will address the UN general debate of the UN General Assembly at its 76th session,”. Bagchi said.

While PM is in Washington, he will also have a bilateral meeting with US President Biden, the spokesperson said.

“We also look forward to bilateral meetings with other Quad leaders as well as bilateral meetings with some other leaders while he is in New York on September 25,” he added.

The QUAD leaders will review the progress made since their first virtual Summit on March 12 this year and discuss regional issues of shared interest.

UNGA

On September 25, the prime minister is scheduled to address the General Debate of the High-Level Segment of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The theme for this year’s General Debate is ‘Building Resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalise the United Nations’.

Missing Hindu in Afghanistan

“We have seen a missing person's reports about a reported Indian national - Bansuri Lal - missing in Kabul. We're in touch with all concerned. We've seen reports about local authorities undertaking investigation. We'll continue to monitor situation and tell you of any developments,” he said.

Operation Devi Shakti

“Until and unless operations resume at Kabul airport, it'll be difficult to say how will people be evacuated. It'll be easier once the operations resume. We are watching this, so that the remaining Indians and Afghans willing to come,” the spokesperson said.
