The National Security Advisers of India and Russia met on Wednesday in the national capital and agreed to coordinate the approaches of two countries in multilateral formats on the Afghan settlement.

Russian Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, who is on a two-day visit to India, and Indian NSA Ajit Doval also discussed the deepening bilateral cooperation in the field of security with an emphasis on further interaction on the anti-terrorist tracking, combating illegal migration and drug trafficking.

Patrushev's visit was a follow-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 24.

The two sides held an exchange of views took place on the military, political and socio-economic situation in Afghanistan.  

During their discussion, the two NSAs also touched upon humanitarian and migration problems in Afghanistan, as well as prospects for both nations to have joint efforts aimed at creating conditions for starting a peaceful settlement process through intra-Afghan dialogue.

The two countries also stressed the need for defining the parameters of the future state structure of Afghanistan by the Afghans themselves. They also emphasised the need to prevent the escalation of violence, social, ethnic and confessional contradictions in the country. 

Patrushev will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar before leaving for Moscow today.

Just a day after the Taliban formed the government in Afghanistan, the Russian NSA and the US chief of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) William Burns-led delegation has also visited India and discussed the Afghan crisis with the NSA Doval. Burns is also scheduled to visit Pakistan for the same.
