Dushanbe, Tajikistan: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Dushanbe and discussed to speedily resolve the remaining issues related to the dragging military standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

"Discussed disengagement in our border areas. Underlined that progress in this regard is essential for restoration of peace and tranquillity, which is the basis for the development of bilateral ties," Jaishankar tweeted.

A statement issued after the meeting, held two months after they last met in Dushanbe at the SCO Foreign Minister’s meeting in July, said the Ministers agreed to more talks by military and diplomatic officials to resolve the “remaining issues on disengagement”.

A statement issued early on Friday by the External Affairs Ministry on Friday quoted Jaishankar as recalling that Wang had said at their last meeting on the sidelines of a meeting of SCO foreign ministers on July 14 that India-China relations “were at low ebb”, and that both sides had agreed a “prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of the either side as it was impacting the relationship in a negative manner”.

The two ministers also exchanged views on recent global developments, and Jaishankar said India “had never subscribed to any clash of civilisations theory”. He said India and China “had to deal with each other on merits and establish a relationship based on mutual respect”.

Earlier, Jaishankar met Tajikistan’s top leadership and exchanged views on the developments in Afghanistan and their impact on regional security.

Jaishankar, who is in the Tajik capital to attend the SCO Summit on the situation in Afghanistan after its takeover by the Taliban, called on Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon. He also met his Kyrgyz counterpart Ruslan Kazakbaev, PTI reported.
