Cyclone Gulab: IMD predicts more rains, flash floods in Telangana; Maharashtra to receive heavy rains

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao declared a holiday on Tuesday for all government offices and educational institutions in the State following the forecast of heavy rains in the next 48 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert to northern districts and a yellow alert for southern parts, as heavy rains pounded parts of Telangana under the impact of Cyclone Gulab.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao declared a holiday on Tuesday for all government offices and educational institutions in the State following the forecast of heavy rains in the next 48 hours.

The State Chief Secretary said that emergency departments like Revenue, Police, Fire Services, Municipal, Panchayati Raj, Irrigation, Roads and Buildings are on emergency duty to ensure that no property or lives are lost due to heavy rains.

The IMD said that the remnants of Cyclone Gulab lay centred over North Telangana and the Vidarbha region in Maharashtra.

The IMD has also sent out warning of a moderate to high risk of flash floods in Sangareddy and Kamareddy districts of Telangana.

A red alert has been issued to fourteen districts of the state, several crops were damaged and low -lying areas were inundated due to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Gulab crossed the Bay of Bengal coast near Kalingapatnam, impacting various districts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with heavy rainfall. It caused widespread rains in several districts of Andhra Pradesh on Monday and also left a trail of destruction. The Visakhapatnam International Airport witnessed severe waterlogging following heavy rainfall.

According to the weather department, Maharashtra's capital Mumbai, Palghar and Thane are also likely to receive very heavy rainfall today.

The IMD has also issued a moderate flash flood warning in Maharashtra adjoining Marathwada, Konkan and Goa adjoining Gujarat region, Telangana and north interior Karnataka. Bidar and Kalaburagi districts of north interior Karnataka have also been issued warnings for flash floods.

Cyclone Gulab, which hit Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, has caused four deaths. Also, 6 people were killed in lightning strikes in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh. CM announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakhs for the family of every deceased person.
