In a landmark decision, the Narendra Modi-led government has approved reservations for OBC and economically weaker sections (EWS) students in the All India Quota for medical admissions. As per the new decision, the reservations will be offered at both undergraduates (MBBS, BDS), as well as postgraduate medical colleges from the current academic year 2021-22 onwards. While OBCs will be given a 27% reservation, candidates from EWS will get a 10% reservation.

The Union Health Ministry said, "This decision would benefit every year nearly 1,500 OBC students in MBBS and 2,500 OBC students in postgraduation and also around 550 EWS students in MBBS and around 1000 EWS students in postgraduation."

"The OBC students from across the country shall now be able to take benefit of this reservation in AIQ Scheme to compete for seats in any State. Being a Central Scheme, the Central List of OBCs shall be used for this reservation. Around 1500 OBC students in MBBS and 2500 in postgraduation will be benefitted through this reservation," ministry added.

The decision is the reflection of the Government’s commitment to provide due reservation for backward and EWS category students.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed about this decision and said 'it will immensely help thousands of our youth every year get better opportunities'.

Under the current rules, all states are required to surrender 15 per cent undergraduate and 50 per cent postgraduate medical and dental seats in state-run colleges to a 'central pool', with the rest going to a 'state pool'.

The all-India quota was introduced in 1986 under the directions of the Supreme Court to provide for domicile-free merit-based opportunities to students from any state aspiring to study in a good medical college located in another state.Initially, there was no reservation under the scheme up to 2007. In 2007, the apex court introduced reservations of 15% for SCs and 7.5% for STs in the all-India quota.
