All you who have at any point travelled in cars or luxury buses would have noticed a thin film of black dots bordering the vehicle’s windshield or windows. Many have taken it for designer film on the car windows but did you know? They have a purpose of being there and are not just a design element.

What are these Black Dots?

This black band of dots is called a Frit and it is part of the window manufacturing process. For this you need to understand how the window glass is made.

The black band is baked into the edges of the windshield glass, along with the black dots. The black band you see at the bottom of the pane helps the glue/adhesive to stick to the glass. When a manufacturer installs a new windshield, the glass is glued to the vehicle and this band/frit becomes the contact point between the glass and the frame.

The Frit then serves a dual purpose: One helping the glass remain attached to the frame and two, also acts a sun protector and prevents the continuous exposure to the sun’s rays from causing erosion or damage to the adhesive.

You will also see this dot pattern behind the visor so that the front passenger and driver are protected from the glaring sun which the visors provided cannot block.
