Wimbledon 2021 final: Novak Djokovic ousts Matteo Berrettini to win record 20th Grand Slam title
This was Novak Djokovic’s 20th Grand Slam title, as he has levelled the feat with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was his sixth Wimbledon singles title, while it puts him in pole position to win the Calendar Slam, along with the Golden Slam.
There was simply no stopping Novak Djokovic of Serbia. The defending champion and reigning world number one ruled over Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the 2021 Wimbledon final in London on Sunday.
It all happened in four sets, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. While the Italian was playing his first Grand Slam final, he was indeed under immense pressure, playing against multiple time Slam finalist and champion.
First set
The opening set saw Djokovic break early, as he led 3-1. However, Berrettini broke back and took the game into the tie-breaker, where he prevailed.
Second set
Nevertheless, just like always, the Serbian had read the Italian’s game and began to step up the ante. Once again, an early lead in the second set, followed by Djokovic’s hold of serve, allowed him to see the set through 6-4.
Third set
The third set happened to be a similar approach from the Serbian, as he earned a break in the closing stages of the set. Although Berrettini did bid to break Djokovic back, some unforced errors, along with the Serbian’s powerful strokes, pushed the Italian onto the back foot, as Nole won the set 6-4.
Fourth set
In the fourth set, both men start well until the Serbian showed a relentless approach and broke the Italian to lead 4-3, thanks to some precise angled strokes. Although Berrettini did manage to save a couple of championship points, Djokovic decided to win it via a double break, thus winning it 6-3.

Reactions
Djokovic: “It was more than a battle. Winning Wimbledon was always the biggest dream of mine as a child. I know how special this is and I don’t want to take this for granted. I was a seven-year-old boy in Serbia, constructing a Wimbledon tennis trophy with improvised materials in my bedroom, and now, I am standing here with six titles. It’s incredible.”
“When I first broke into the Top 10, for three or four years, I lost most of the big matches against these guys, and something shifted at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. The past ten years have been an incredible journey, and it’s not stopping here.”
Berrettini: “Novak was better than me, as he is a great champion. He is right in the history of the sport, and he deserves all the plaudits. I hope it’s not my last Grand Slam final. It’s such an honour to be here, and it’s been a really great run the past couple of weeks and also at The Queen’s Club.”
