The US Open 2021 women’s singles final was held on Saturday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. Emma Raducanu of Great Britain emerged victorious, taming Leylah Fernandez of Canada in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

It was Raducanu’s maiden Grand Slam title win. Furthermore, she smashed records by not just becoming a qualifier to win the title; it also happened to be her maiden tour-level career title.

The match
The unseeded women were engaged in a fierce tennis display, with scorching baseline winners and bold all-court play. However, the Britisher broke early to lead 2-0 in the opening set before the Canadian broke back. While Fernandez earned some unforced errors in return, it was late in the set when Raducanu managed to break, which happened to be a win on her fourth set point via a flaming forehand.

As for the second set, the Canadian took an early lead, while the Britisher displayed immense gameplay tactics through long rallies to break her back and eventually make it 5-2. Before serving for the championship, she took a medical timeout to treat her scraping knee while sliding for a shot. However, it didn’t stop her as in her third championship point, she fired an ace and fell on the floor with joy.

Reaction
“I think this final shows that the future of women’s tennis and just the depth of the game right now is so great. I think every single player in the women’s draw definitely has a shot to win any tournament. I hope that the next generation can follow in the steps of the greatest legends—like Billie Jean King—and everyone who is at the top of the game right now,” she said after her triumph.

“It means so much to have Virginia here and also Tim. To have these British legends and icons for me to follow in their footsteps really helps, and it gave me the belief to actually do it,” she concluded.
