Is Naomi Osaka planning on taking a break from tennis?
Naomi Osaka of Japan lost her US Open 2021 third-round clash against Leylah Fernandez of Canada. Meanwhile, she has stated that she is unsure of when she would play next.
Japan's Naomi Osaka suffered a shock third-round defeat in the 2021 US Open, falling to Canada' Leylah Fernandez 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-4. However, it is Osaka's post-match comments that has the world talking and wondering.
She told WTA during the post-match press conference that she does not feel happy of late even if she wins. Although she is relieved when she wins, she becomes despondent upon a loss, which she thinks is not normal.
She went on to add that she is wondering what to do next. Trying to hold back her tears, she said she was unsure when she would play next and could possibly take a break from playing.

Osaka has been struggling with her mental health of late, as she had withdrawn from the French Open mid-tournament and skipped the Wimbledon too. She took part in the Tokyo Olympics, where she became the first tennis star to light up the Olympic torch, while she was knocked out in Round 3.
Since then, she has played just a couple of tournaments. She also took part in Cincinnati a couple of weeks before the US Open, where she won the opening game before losing in the following round to eventual runner-up Jil Teichmann.
Meanwhile, Fernandez brought an end to Osaka's 16-match winning run in the Grand Slams, which began last year at the US Open that she had won. She carried the same in the Australian Open this year, which she eventually won.
