Tokyo Olympics: Race walker Gurpreet Singh fails to finish 50km walk due to cramps

India suffered a setback early on Friday morning, as its hopes of winning a medal in the race walking category were dashed. Race Walker Gurpreet Singh failed to finish the 50km final after dropping back due to his cramps.

He could complete just 35km of the race, as Tokyo's conditions were sweltering and humid. After the halfway mark, at 25km, he was lurking behind at the 49th spot, clocking 2:01:54.

Meanwhile, at the 30km mark, Poland's Dawid Tomala took control of the entire race and never looked back, besides extending his lead to over a minute at a point, making him a sure favourite for the gold. While he was in extreme discomfort after crossing the finishing line, the smile appeared on his face after his gold medal was confirmed with a clock speed of 3:50:08. Jonathan Hilbert of Germany claimed the silver with a time of 3:50:44, whereas Evan Dunfee of Canada bagged the bronze at 3:50:59.

On Thursday, KT Irfan, Sandeep Kumar and Rahul failed to give India any hope in the 20km race walk, as they were unable to finish the race. While Sandeep was placed 23rd, Rahul and Irfan finished 47th and 52nd, respectively.
