In what comes as yet another setback in the tennis sector of the Tokyo Olympics, top Australian men's star Nick Kyrgios has pulled out. He has cited an abdominal injury as the reason for the same, while the same injury had compelled him to retired mid-way during the third-round match of the ongoing Wimbledon.

However, Kyrgios also stated that playing in front of an empty venue does not suit him well, as it was another reason for his pullout. His pullout statement came just hours before the Japanese government decided to enforce a state of emergency during the entire tenure of the Olympics, meaning that none of the spectators would be allowed inside the venues.

"It's a decision I didn't take lightly. It's been my dream to represent Australia at the Olympics and I know I may never get that opportunity again. But, I also know myself. The thought of playing in front of empty stadiums just doesn't sit right with me. It never has," he said in a tweet.

"I also wouldn't want to take an opportunity away from a healthy Aussie athlete ready to represent the country. I will also take all the time I need to get my body right. Good luck to all the Aussies competing and I'll see you back on the court real soon," he added.

Kyrgios joins a long list of top tennis stars pulling out, alongside Rafael Nadal, Denis Shapovalov, Stanislas Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem. Among the females, Serena Williams and Simona Halep are the two top stars to have pulled out so far.

Consequently, now, Tennis Australia will have to find a suitable replacement for him. Meanwhile, the women's department from the country would be headlined by reigning world number one, Ashleigh Barty.
