Martyn fell ill while resting at home on Boxing Day and was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was put on an induced coma due to meningitis.

The two-time ODI World Cup winner’s serious health issues caused concerns and panic among the cricket fraternity, who poured in wishes for a speedy recovery. On Wednesday, December 31, Adam Gilchrist confirmed on behalf of his family that Damien Martyn was receiving the treatment at the Queensland and that his partner, Amand, and his family were grateful for the outpouring of prayers and well-wishes from fans and the cricket fraternity.

On Saturday, Martyn’s partner released an official statement, stating that the former Australian cricketer is ‘progressing well’ and expressed her gratitude to the medical team at Gold Coast University Hospital for their care and support during the challenging time. Amanda Martyn also sought privacy for their family while he continues his recovery.

Martyn Comes Out of Induced Coma

After Amanda Martyn confirmed Damien’s progress, Adam Gilchrist provided another positive update on the former Australian batter’s health. Gilchrist stated that Damien Martyn has come out of the induced coma, which is perceived to be a miracle for his family.

Former Australia captain further stated that Martyn will be moved out of the ICU and will continue to remain in the hospital for further treatment, given the positive response to the treatment and significant improvement in his health condition.

“He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out of the coma to the point where his family feels it’s like some sort of miracle,” Gilchrist said as quoted by The Age.

“It has been so positive that they’re hopeful he will be able to move out of the ICU into another part of the hospital, which is representative of what a great recovery it’s been and how quickly it has flipped around,” he added.

‘Turnaround Has Been Miraculous’

Former Australia captain confirmed that his ex-teammate will continue his treatment in the hospital, while hailing his miraculous turnaround after a critical health scare that left his condition serious.

“He’s in good spirits and overwhelmed by the support. There is still some treatment and monitoring to go, but it’s looking positive,” Gilchrist said.

“He will remain in the hospital and continue to receive treatment, but the turnaround has been miraculous,” he added.

Daniem Martyn played for Australia from 1992 and 2006, featuring in 208 ODI matches and 67 Tests. In his International career, Martyn has amassed 9872 runs, including 18 centuries and 61 fifties, at an average of 42.92 in 279 matches.

Martyn played his final match for Australia against England in the Ashes series at Adelaide before retiring in 2006, concluding a distinguished career spanning over a decade.
