Five reasons why Sasikala is in a hurry to become CM

  • VK Sasikala is in a severe hurry to become the CM of Tamil Nadu, just 60 days after the death of Jayalalithaa
  • If the Governor had not enforced a delay, Sasikala would have been sworn in as CM on Tuesday morning itself.
  • So why is Sasikala in such a hurry? Is the Supreme Court case on her mind?
Why Sasikala is hurrying to become the Chief Minister

VK Sasikala seems to be in a tearing hurry to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In fact, if it wasn't for Tamil Nadu Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao's reluctance, the oath would have already happened by Tuesday afternoon.

However, the Governor has made himself unavailable for at least two days, and there is a growing sense of discontent in Tamil Nadu over this abrupt elevation. The Chinnamma juggernaut has been stalled for now. Here are six reasons why Chinnamma is in such a hurry to become the CM -

  • In the next week, the Supreme Court is going to announce its verdict on the Jayalalithaa-Sasikala disproportionate assets case. If the verdict finds Sasikala guilty, then her dream to become the CM would forever remain just a dream. Perhaps she is hoping to jump the verdict, and become CM - even if it might be only for a week.

  • Sticking the with possibility that the SC verdict might go against her, as CM she can appoint a candidate of her choice from within the AIADMK. Perhaps she hopes to run the administration through her control. This will be much harder if O Paneersevam remains, or once again becomes, the Chief Minister.

  • Political experts have repeatedly opined that PM Modi and the BJP hope to play a larger role in Tamil Nadu politics, through O Paneerselvam - the candidate the saffron party appears to prefer. Sasikala would become insignificant in Tamil Nadu politics if Modi is successful in this endeavour. Taking over the position of the CM is the only way to restrain the growth of O Paneerselvam.

  • Even if she sits on the CM's chair for just a week, she still gets the designation of former Chief Minister. The position of power, even if it lasts just a week, gives her certain political status, which is completely lacks currently. Hence, she is perhaps in a hurry to obtain the status before the verdict of the Supreme Court.

  • If she doesn’t become CM soon, then her political career becomes completely bleak. As a 'behind the scenes' confidante of Jayalalithaa, Sasikala has never faced the electorate or performed the usual tasks of a public representative. For that matter she has never contested any elections either. Becoming the CM through backdoor channels at a time like this is her best bet. Unlike Jayalalithaa, Sasikala probably cannot recover should the AIADMK suffer a reversal in the polls.
