Kerala Police has decided to form an ethical hacker unit to combat cyber crimes more efficiently. The state police have decided to create a team of ethical hackers who will help detect and prevent cyber crimes.

The 300-member ethical hacking unit will be known as 'Khaki Hats' and will work in association with Cyber Cell. The police force is also planning to introduce smart cards for police personnel and to form a closed user group mobile connection for the entire force. The project titled Samhitha will be launched with the support of BSNL.

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing will develop the clone-free hi-tech smart card for the force. All police personnel will be provided with the chip-enabled cards that would contain information about the official that are useful for administrative purposes.

Under the 'Khaki Hat' programme, 300 select police officers would be given training as certified ethical hackers. The project would be implemented with the support of EU Council.

Kerala police had earlier expressed their helplessness in tracking persons who are using foreign IP addresses to spread anti-social elements through social media.
