Beware ATMs in Bengaluru might shut soon

It has been two months since demonetisation happened. The banks, post offices and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are not facing long queues as the situation has become much better than before. But the ATMs across several cities, especially Bengaluru, still sporting a sorry sight as most of them are out of cash.

This is happening due to the lack of new currency notes. Apparently, still 60% of the Bengaluru ATMs are far away from being functional. Banks have also started shutting down several ATMs across the city. They believe that the ATMs are going to be redundant as people are mostly resorting to digital payment options.

As a matter of fact, digital payment options are indeed a great way to go cashless. But that is not going to feasible for all. How will the poor people survive without cash? How will they pay for their daily meals? How will they pay for their travelling? There are a lot more issues other than these.

Common people in the city also need cash for the daily expenses. If ATMs continue to remain dry like this, the situation is going to go for a toss pretty soon again.

Banks are only filling the ATMs on the main roads and the ones near and inside the business hubs in Bengaluru. Rest of the ATMs in the interiors are not being filled on a regular basis.

The banks feel that maintaining ATMs is an expensive affair as they have to keep round-the-clock security and fill the machines with cash continuously. Thus, they are actually considering shutting down the ATMs in many parts of the city.
