Dubai: For the majority of passengers leaving from its hub in Dubai, Emirates, the largest long-haul airline in the world, will gradually phase out paper boarding passes as a way to further its environmental sustainability efforts.

From May 15, travellers checking in at Terminal 3, where the airline is based, will need to use mobile boarding passes, which they will obtain via email or SMS.
Those who check in online can retrieve their boarding pass from the Emirates app or add it to their Apple Wallet or Google Wallet accounts.

“This initiative will significantly reduce paper waste while simultaneously offering a convenient and speedy digitized check in experience for passengers departing Dubai,” Emirates said.

“It reduces the risk of lost or misplaced boarding passes, giving passengers peace of mind when travelling.”

The action is part of its attempts to implement sustainable practices that lessen waste and encourage the use of digital channels to give travellers a more convenient journey. The mobile boarding pass can be utilised at all points of the journey, including security screening, boarding, and Dubai Duty-Free.

However, certain passengers, such as those flying with infants or unaccompanied minors, or those requiring special assistance or making connections with other airlines, may still need a physical boarding pass in specific circumstances.

If passengers don't have a mobile device or are unable to access the information on their devices for any reason, they can request to print a boarding pass at the check-in counters.

As countries reopened international crossings and relaxed restrictions connected to the coronavirus, Emirates last week claimed that it swung to a record yearly profit on high travel demand.

In the fiscal year that concluded on March 31, the airline reported a Dh10.6 billion ($2.9 billion) profit as opposed to a Dh3.9 billion loss the year before.
