People are looking for ways to cut down on the commuting time by either staying close to office or within reach from metro stations. A city-based online real estate player did a survey and found that citizens can save up to 6 hours a week and 36 days a year only on commute. It is estimated that people can save up to Rs 10,500 per year if they decided to stay in the right location.
It (Bengaluru) looks for easy ways to reach office. At least, that is what the real estate market in the city believes. But that is not difficult to believe if we consider the fact that over the past few years, the traffic situation in the city has worsened. Brokers say that people are more keen on residing in places that are easily accessible from the metro station or prefer to stay within meters from their place of work.

Speaking to the Bangalore Mirror, Mahantesh Gowda, a real-estate agent in HSR Layout said, "The trend is picking up among new tech professionals, who want to save whatever little they can. This is because commutes have become more difficult so companies have stopped providing transportation and are instead giving a lumpsum amount as reimbursement.”
Earlier the most sought-after residential areas included Indiranagar, Koramangala, BTM Layout and Jayanagar since tech hubs like Sarjapura, Electronics City and Whitefield were easily accessible from these places. However, with increasing number of private cars clogging the roads, people are opting for areas that are connected by the metro.
The gravity of the situation can further be determined if the company policies on conveyance is considered. For instance, companies have stopped providing cabs to and from office and are either reimbursing travel allowances or are providing a lump sum amount to their employees as conveyance funds. Now, this again gives rise to another scenario where the employees try their best to save as much as they can. This can be done only if they stay close to their office, preferably at a walking distance.
Interestingly, a city-based online real estate player did a survey and found that citizens can save up to 6 hours a week and 36 days a year only on commute. It also added that people can save up to Rs 10,500 per year if they decided to stay in the right location, in lieu of travelling. The survey brings to light another growing concern in the city-increasing wastage of resources. It is said that the city wastes over 76,712 years and Rs 2,940 crore in commute every year.
