At least 17 dead due to heavy rains, lightning in Maharashtra; over 560 rescued

FollowAt least 17Â people were killed in torrential rains, floods, and lightning in portions of Maharashtra, with the Marathwada area suffering the brunt of the rain fury, officials said on Tuesday, while more than 560 people were rescued after the NDRF was activated and helicopters were dispatched. Furthermore, about 200 animals were killed or swept away. They added that several houses were destroyed in the torrential rains that battered Marathwada on Sunday and Monday, wreaking havoc in a district known for its recurrent drought. On Tuesday, significant rain fell in parts of the area, including Mumbai.

The rain-soaked Marathwada area in central Maharashtra comprises eight districts: Aurangabad, Latur, Osmanabad, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Jalna, and Hingoli. Heavy rain in the Manjara dam catchment region caused authorities to open all 18 gates of the reservoir to dump water on Tuesday, causing flooding in several communities in the Beed district and an alert in other neighbouring districts, officials said.

According to the local administration, all 18 gates of the Manjara dam and 11 gates of the Majalgaon dam were opened, releasing 78,397 cusecs and 80,534 cusecs of water, respectively. According to a disaster management official in Mumbai, 13 people have died due to heavy rains and lightning in areas of Maharashtra, while 136 others have been injured.
205 animals, including 60 big milch cows, were swept away or died due to the recent heavy rains. A total of 564 individuals were rescued from rain and flood-damaged regions across many districts. Officials stated on Tuesday evening that 459 people were rescued from the flood-affected areas in Osmanabad district in the previous 48 hours, and the NDRF dispatched a helicopter to assist others stuck in floodwaters.
