It was a moment of pride for 15-year old Abhay Agarwal's parents when he cracked one of the toughest exams in the country-IIT. He cleared his JEE Advanced this year and is likely to be the the youngest person to enroll at IIT. Abhay will be turning 16 in November and has been allotted a seat at IITBHU already. He scored an all India rank of 2467.Ā

Taking pride in enrolling him as the youngest student in the institute was Vice-chairman of IIT-JEE Kanpur zone Prof Shalabh. Speaking to the Times of India,Ā
he said how pleased he was to meet the boy while verifying his documents. In fact, other staff members also expressed their surprise when they learned about his age. One of the JEE staffers said, "He could be the youngest candidate this year to join an IIT. His class X marksheet confirms that he is 15 and a half years old. He was born on November 9, 2001."

Abhay, who has secured admission in mechanical engineering, is yet to confirm his seat and has opted to float the given choice of institute as he wants to study in IIT Roorkee. Speaking to the newspaper, Abhay said, "Since I jumped initial classes, I could complete my XII before other students. I have been lucky to crack JEE Advanced as well. I want to be in IIT-Roorkee and hope I will get it."

Belonging to a humble family, Abhay sacrificed a lot for his age. While boys of his age were active on Facebook and other social media platforms, he refrained from using the same to concentrate on his studies. His father, a pump attendant at Firozabad Nagar Nigam testifies to the hard work that Abhay has put in. He said, "Abhay has brought us laurels at an early age. When the chief medical officer in Firozabad had to prepare his medical certificate, he was surprised. At IIT Kanpur also, JEE staff was amazed to know he was this young. He is a talented boy with high capabilities. He would finish BTech also in the stipulated time."

Meanwhile, Abhay said, "Though I created a Facebook account three years ago, I stopped using it when I entered class XI. After cracking JEE Advanced, I was gifted a smartphone by my father. Before this I never used a smartphone."

Abhay had scored 87.2% in class XII exams from CBSE and 85.63% in class X from UP Board. With a keen interest in Robotics, Abhay aims to start as business in the same. He said, "I want to launch a start-up which would deal in products related to robotics. This is why I am opting for mechanical engineering." Abhay would be the second engineer in his family. His brother is doing BTech from a private institute.Ā
