AAP elects Arvind Kejriwal as National Convenor for a third term
Earlier this year, the party’s constitution was amended to grant an individual hold a post more than twice.
New Delhi: In a big boost for the party’s prospects in the upcoming Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal was unanimously elected as the party’s national convener for the third time during the National Executive meeting on Sunday (September 12).
It is pertinent to note that in April 2016, Kejriwal was elected as the National Convenor of the party for the second time. But due to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Kejriwal’s tenure was extended till 2020. The meeting of the council was then postponed in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier this year, the party’s constitution was amended to grant an individual hold a post more than twice. The constitution earlier said that “no member will hold the same post as an office-bearer for more than two consecutive terms of three years each”.
According to sources, after the new amendment, which was made official in January 2021, the duration of the term has been increased to 5 years and the bar on the number of terms for officer bearers has been lifted.
Notably, 34 members of the National Executive have the power to elect the National Convenor of the party.
Arvind Kejriwal will be the Aam Aadmi Party’s National Convenor for the next 5 years.
On Sunday, national secretary Pankaj Gupta, who has also served two terms as an office bearer, was also re-elected to the post and ND Gupta was re-elected for the post of the party’s National Treasurer.
