Google aims to replenish 20 per cent more water than it uses by 2030
In a blog post, Google Chief Sustainability Officer Kate Brandt stated that the firm is committed to a water stewardship objective of replenishing more water than we consume by 2030 and supporting water security in areas where we operate.
FollowAlphabet Inc's Google said on Thursday that it intends to restore 20% more water than its offices and data centres consume by 2030, addressing worries about water-guzzling tech facilities amid historic droughts. In a blog post, Google Chief Sustainability Officer Kate Brandt stated that the firm is committed to a water stewardship objective of replenishing more water than we consume by 2030 and supporting water security in areas where we operate. It went on to say that Google will restore 120 per cent of the water we use on average in our offices and data centres.
According to the latest recent report, Google used 3.4 billion gallons of water in 2019. According to Reuters, the firm has not yet begun tracking replacement rates. It did, however, emphasise that the 20 per cent target represents what is required to bring places with severe or higher high water shortages to normal levels. Google utilises water to cool the stacks of computers that store and analyse search requests, YouTube videos, and other data in its data centres. Droughts are becoming more severe throughout the world as a result of climate change, according to researchers. The data centres of Mountain View, a California-based corporation, are spread throughout the globe.

Google intends to meet its new goal by using less water in its facilities and assisting in conservation efforts in neighbouring communities, beginning with areas where water is minimal. Google's latest initiatives include collecting runoff for toilet flushing and financing the eradication of water-hungry exotic plants. Google is even assisting with installing toilet leak detection devices in low-income homes in Southern California to save waste and keep water flowing through plumbing systems.
Google stated that it would continue to assist merchants in reducing use. Google stated in September 2020 that it intended to run its offices and data centres on carbon-free electricity 24/7 by 2030.
