The Uttarakhand government on Monday extended the Covid-19-induced curfew in the state till June 1 despite a considerable fall in its daily coronavirus cases. However, the state government gave several relaxations, allowing shops selling essential commodities to remain open from 8 am to 11 am.

Since the beginning of the second wave of Covid-19, Uttarakhand has recorded the highest number of deaths in the first 20 days of May, according to the state health department.

According to the data received from Uttarakhand Health Department, there have been 2,795 deaths between May 1 and 20 and 1,23,868 new cases have been reported.

"RT-PCR test will be mandatory before 72 hours. Covid-19 curfew will be valid only for the visit of the patient to the doctor, the pass will be given on the e-pass application in the health emergency," the state government had said.

The state had emerged as one of the coronavirus hotspots in India, following the Kumbh Mela and Char Dham Yatra after which a curfew was imposed in the state till May 18. It was later extended till May 25 and the state government also announced a restriction of a maximum of 20 people at weddings.

Uttarakhand is following the footsteps of Delhi as the national capital is also witnessing a lower number of cases but Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended the lockdown in the national capital till May 30.

Moreover, the Union Government has already warned of the possible third wave that has forced states to keep citizens under restrictions. The Covid-19 cases have fallen in the country however the healthcare system which recently almost collapsed cannot be again put at risk.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat last week said that his government has prepared for a possible third wave of Covid-19 pandemic, adding that the state has adequate ventilators and oxygen beds.
