BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma has been sworn in as the 15th chief minister of Assam at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra today. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Sarma, 52, who held key portfolios in the previous Assam government, including finance, health, and education — succeeds Sarbananda Sonowal as the Chief Minister, garnering support from the 75 MLAs of the BJP-led alliance. He was elected as the leader of the newly-elected MLAs of the party on Sunday.

In his address after being elected unanimously, was effusive in his praise for former CM Sarbananda Sonowal and described his tenure as 'unblemished without a single charge of corruption or any other allegations'. The BJP leader who owed his early rise to two former chief ministers from Congress had to toil for many years with dogged determination to achieve his goal.

CM of Tripura Biplab Deb, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, Manipur CM N Biren Singh, and Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio were present at the swearing-in ceremony of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet. Former CM Sarbananda Sonowal also present.

The BJP leadership had called Sarma and Sonowal to Delhi on Saturday to finalize the CM’s name. It is being said that Sonowal will now return to Centre as an alternate leadership position will be given to him.

A five-time MLA and a minister in all cabinets since 2001, Sarma's political acumen and the ability to get work done against all odds was not only noticed but rewarded by his mentors- former Congress Chief Ministers Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi- with both giving him ample opportunities to rise.

BJP-led NDA secured a comfortable majority in Assam winning 75 seats of the total 126 constituencies. While BJP secured 60 seats, about 33%, its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party, Liberal (UPPL) bagged nine and six seats respectively.
