Former Aligarh Muslim University student leader Sharjeel Usmani has been booked under several charges, including sedition, in Lucknow's Hazratganj police station in connection with his speech at the Elgaar Parishad conclave in Pune last month.
The First Information Report claims Usmani tried to create hatred towards the Yogi Adityanath government.
He was also accused of trying to promote enmity among groups, hurting religious sentiments and conspiring against the government.
A similar complaint has also been lodged at Pune's Swargate police station by Pradip Gavade, a local leader of BJP's youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.
Usmani is under scanner for his alleged offensive remarks against Hindu society over incidents of mob lynching in the country.
The January 30 Elgaar Parishad event, which was organised by retired Justice BG Kolse Patil, was attended by writer-activist Arundhati Roy and former IPS officer S M Mushrif.
State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has said the police have registered a case against Usmani after scanning the video clippings, and that he will be arrested from "whichever state he is in, be it Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or Gujarat or elsewhere".
To recall, Sharjeel Usmani was arrested last year in July for his alleged role in the December 15 violence during the protest against Citizenship Amendment Act in AMU. He was later released on bail.
Usmani, the son of Assistant Professor Tariq Usmani of the AMU’s Department of Geography, was in the news again in September when he allegedly posted a letter with on micro-blogging site Twitter in which he has again tried to incite the Muslim population against the government and CAA.
