The government has announced that it will increase minimum airfares by around 13-15% for domestic flights from June 1.

This is the second increase in airfare in 2021. The new hike comes just over three months since the government raised the airfare by 10-30 per cent in February 2021.

Sources said that the move aims to assist airlines in recovering from the devastating second wave of Coronavirus.

The Civil Aviation Ministry order said that the lower limit for flights under 40 minutes of duration would be increased from Rs 2,300 to Rs 2,600.

Similarly, flights with a duration between 40 and 60 minutes will have a lower limit of Rs 3,300 instead of Rs 2,900 now, the order said.

For flights with 60-90 minutes duration, the airfare will be charged at Rs 4,000; 90-120 minutes at Rs 4,700; 150-180 minutes at Rs 6,100; and 180-210 minutes at Rs 7,400.

The government order said that the sudden surge in the number of active Coronavirus cases across the country had resulted in a decrease in passenger traffic.

Compared to February 28, 2021, when around 3.13 lakh domestic air passengers boarded domestic flights, only 39,000 passengers boarded them on May 25.
