Even as reports of widespread post-election violence in West Bengal continue to come in, police have confirmed that some of these incidents have never happened.

Election Commission-appointed Birbhum district Superintendent of Police Nagendra Nath Tripathi IPS told media persons that reports of gang rape in Birbhum are fake.

On Tuesday, Twitter accounts of the Bengal BJP and its state leaders were abuzz with information of a BJP worker's gang rape in Birbhum's Nanoor.

Soumitra Khan, Parliamentarian and state Yuva Morcha president, posted a picture of a woman with her face blurred on his Twitter account and claimed that the BJP worker had been gang-raped by Trinamool Congress workers at Nanoor.

As the claims went viral, the police launched a probe.

Sharing the probe revelation, the Birbhum SP said that even the local BJP leadership is unaware of any such incident. The woman in question also refuted what happened to her.

"I inform everyone that it is fake news... There is no law and order problem here now," the police officer said.

"We are trying to find from where this fake news originated on the social media. We will take appropriate action against them," he added

Also, on Tuesday evening, Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal held a media briefing with the alleged victim, who confirmed that the news was fake.

She did admit, though, that a few Trinamool workers had threatened her, following which she had gone to another village out of fear.

"But what has been claimed did not happen with me. I have complained to the police to take action against those who have circulated the news," the woman said.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the National Human Rights Commission ordered a spot inquiry following reports of post-poll violence from several districts in West Bengal.

"Considering as a fit case of an alleged violation of Right to Life of the innocent citizens, the commission has taken cognizance of the matter and requested its DIG (Investigation) to constitute a team of officers of the Investigation Division of the commission to conduct an on-the-spot fact-finding probe and to submit a report at the earliest, preferably within two weeks," the NHRC said in a statement.
