The 11 men convicted in the case walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. They had completed more than 15 years in jail.

Massive controversy erupted over the remission of 11 convicts from the Godhra sub-jail on August 15, 2022. The decision of the state government had sparked a debate about whether relief should be granted in such heinous cases.

Bilkis Bano said before taking "such a big and unjust decision", nobody enquired about her safety and well-being. In a statement, she said that her sorrow and wavering faith are not just for herself but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts.

The Supreme Court's order directing the Gujarat government to consider the remission of the sentence as per the July 1992 remission policy paved the way for the premature release of 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case, lawyers said on Tuesday.

Bilkis Bano's husband, Yakub Rasul, said that he learned about their release from the media. Rasul said they don't know when the convicts submitted their application or which ruling the state government took into consideration.

All the eleven convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2002 post-Godhra Bilkis Bano gang rape case on Monday walked out of the Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.

Bhatt is the third person detained in the case, after social activist Teesta Setalvad and former Gujarat Director General of Police R B Sreekumar. He has been imprisoned in Palanpur jail in Banaskantha district since 2018 in connection with a 27-year-old case in which he is suspected of planting drugs to frame a Rajasthan-based lawyer. 

Setalvad, on her part, lodged a complaint with Santacruz police station in Mumbai, claiming that the "arrest" was illegal.

Activist Teesta Setalvad has been detained by the Gujarat ATS from Mumbai in connection with an FIR registered against her.

 A total of 59 “karsevaks” were killed in the Godhra train burning incident on February 27, 2002, triggering the worst communal riots in the history of Gujarat.
 

Karnataka minister CT Ravi said Godhra-like situation would arise if the majority loses patience. Congress leader UT Khader had claimed that Karnataka would burn if the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is implemented.
