The government plans to launch a web portal where Indian wives stranded abroad can find help.  This move could help several women who are threatened with divorce after their wedding. The website also gives details on civil society groups that offer support and institutionalised aid available from the government.

Cases of women being harassed, abandoned and tortured by their husbands abroad are one too many. Thankfully, the Indian government has finally found a way to reach out to those women who find themselves in a difficult situation.

It may be a little too late but the Ministry of External Affairs, Home Affairs and Woman and Child departments have found a solution for Indian wives stranded in a different country. The government announced its plans to start a web portal on which women can state their complaints.

The portal also gives information on NGOs that can help them, civil society groups that offer support and institutionalised aid available from the Indian government, reported The Indian Express. This is beneficial for many Indian brides who are often confused about whom to approach in cases related to dowry, abuse, divorce etc.

So far, such cases have been handled by a host of different departments but this portal helps to streamline it. Indian brides who move abroad after their wedding face a host of problems.

This decision comes after the Ministry of External Affairs released a booklet titled, “Marriage to Overseas Indians.” This contains information on what women can do when they’re deserted by their NRI spouses, their legal options, and authorities who can help them.

Between 2011 and 2015, the government received 275 complaints from women living abroad. However, a study conducted by New Jersey based NGO Manavi revealed that 12,000 deserted wives were living in Gujarat in 2004. This number is much more in Punjab, where 25,000 wives of NRIs were living in the state in 2007.
