Vigilance sleuths conducted inspections at several village offices in Kerala on Friday, following the suicide of a farmer at the Chembanoda village office in Kozhikode on Wednesday night.

The officials were acting on an order from Vigilance director Loknath Behera, who had instructed the department to inspect village offices across the state to bring out any malpractices. Behera also ordered to take cases against village office staff with immediate effect if any discrepancies are found.

A Vigilance team, led by the Kozhikode DySP, conducted inspection at the Chembanoda office following allegations that village officials had tampered with the documents related to Joy's land.

Kavil Purayidathil Joy, 57, committed suicide outside the village office on Wednesday night after being frustrated by the staff stonewalling his attempts to pay tax for his land.

The land tax for Joys' plot was finally collected on Friday after his brother and relatives arrived at the village office with special permission from the district collector and remitted the required amount.

Meanwhile, Joy's relatives staged a protest in front of the village office, alleging that the staff have tampered with the documents. They demanded a copy of the documents and a proper explanation.

However, village officials explained that the corrections made in the documents were based on a complaint  they received through the Sutharya Keralam initiative. The office staff said they will provide a copy of the documents if anyone applies for it through the RTI Act.
