Those who take to violence wont be spared says PM Modi

After Haryana witnessed unprecedented violence over conviction of self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim in a rape case, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that those who take the law in their hands or take to violence will not be spared.

In his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi said everybody will have to bow before the law. He said the Constitution provides scope for redressal of all kinds of grievances.

"I had said it from the Red Fort (in Independence Day speech) that in the name of faith, violence will not be tolerated. Whether the faith is religious, political or in favour of a individual or a tradition, nobody has the right to take the law into his own hands in the name of faith," the prime minister declared.

Modi had, on August 25, strongly condemned the "deeply distressing" violence that swept Haryana and some other states after conviction of self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case and appealed for peace.

Modi reviewed the situation with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and said officials have been asked to work round-the-clock to restore normalcy.

"India is the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Buddha. Violence is not acceptable in the nation, in any form," said the Prime Minister. "I want to assure my countrymen that people who take the law into their own hands and are on the path of violent suppression, whether it is a person or a group, neither this country nor any government will tolerate it. Each and every person will have to abide by the law; the law will fix accountability and the guilty will unquestionably be punished," he said.

Narendra Modi, however, did not mention Haryana nor did he mention Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in his speech. The Haryana and Punjab High Court had taken the Centre to task for the Modi-led government’s ‘knee-jerk reaction’ to the violence. The Prime Minister is of the nation and not the BJP, the Punjab and Haryana high court remarked on Saturday, August 26.
