In a significant stride forward in ensuring the protection and security of women in the city, Bengaluru Police has assembled a squad of female policemen who would be particularly trained to deal with law and order issues affecting women and children. A team of 31 specially trained female cops will ensure the proper handling of criminal events against women in the city. The crew will also make sure that the rescued ladies receive the appropriate counselling to recover from the experience.

The Bengaluru Commissioner of Police, Kamal Pant, made the news on his Twitter account yesterday, stating that the squad will be known as ‘Rani Chennamma Pade' – ‘By Women, For Women, Of Women.'

Pant further stated that the squad has its own set of goals and objectives, including the overall protection and security of women and children. The ‘Rani Chennamma Pade' team will focus on educating and training women in basic self-defense techniques, as well as creating legal awareness about women and child-related laws such as POCSO and the NDPS Act, because many times women are unaware of their rights and the laws in their favour, which discourages them from filing complaints in cases of criminal incidents against them.

The team will also work to raise awareness about the use of social media and cybercrime and how to file complaints in such cases.
Several city police agencies, including the Mumbai Police's Nirbhaya squad, have established specific female cop squads dedicated to combating crimes against women.
