Congress condemns arrest of Dalit women, toddler
The arrest of two Dalit women along with a child in Kannur has kicked up a storm in the state with the Congress severely criticising the police action and deciding to launch a massive protest against the government.
Calling the arrest inhuman, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president VM Sudheeran said the incident shows the political 'intolerance' of the Left government.
A case was filed against Akhila and Anjana, daughters of Congress bloc secretary for attacking the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPM office and assaulting a party worker here, police summoned the sisters to the station promising to grant bail but instead recorded the arrest under non-bailable offence and put them behind bars along with Akhila's two-year-old daughter.
The Scheduled Castes Commission Chairman RL Puniya has ordered an investigation into the issue. State police chief Loknath Behera has also called for a probe.
On June 12, the women enraged by casteist remarks attacked CPM office in Thalasserry, soon a gang of CPM goons reached their home and assaulted their father and vandalised vehicle and window panes of the house. Three CPM workers were booked after the incident.
